In the exhibition Photographer, Fotograf Contemporary will showcase her photographic books as well as previously unpublished images from the Rooms and Beds series. Fotograf Contemporary has prepared an exhibition at Fotograf Gallery in Prague titled Photographer, focusing on the work of Libuše Jarcovjáková, one of the most prominent contemporary Czech photographers. The exhibition, which runs from November 19 to December 20, 2024, explores the collaborative work of Libuše Jarcovjáková and editor Lucie Černá, who is known for her deep interest in photography as a medium that transcends all limits. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the artist’s photographic books and new, previously unpublished color analog photographs from the long-term project Rooms and Beds. A special limited-edition print from this series will also be available for purchase on the platform fotografcontemporary.cz.
Jarcovjáková’s photographs address universal themes: streets, night, relationships, work, and moods. The rawness of the ordinary, combined with the poetry of the everyday, leaves a powerful artistic statement about time and life. Jarcovjáková is known for her authentic style, often captured in black-and-white analog photographs.
Few people know Jarcovjáková’s work better than curator and publisher Lucie Černá. Their collaboration on the artist’s books has lasted for many years, and the exhibition at Fotograf Gallery provides insight into how both of them think about the artist’s work through their mutually inspiring cooperation. Under the Untitled publishing house, they have published three successful books of Jarcovjáková’s photographs: Evokativ, Supersonico, and T-Club, which visually and thematically reveal both familiar and hidden aspects of this original photographer’s work.
The Photographer exhibition will present these photographic books along with new color analog photographs, continuing Jarcovjáková’s Rooms and Beds series. In this project, she has systematically documented places where she stays overnight, beginning in the early 1980s. “Libuše perceives space as a whole. The exhibited photographs show both details of rooms and the actual places of sleep. At the same time, it is important for her not to focus solely on the given situation. Part of the series also includes photographs showing the moments before entering the room. It’s like watching a short film that depicts the details of someone’s journey toward sleep, but one that is constantly interrupted by intriguing details of the surrounding reality,” explained curator Lucie Černá.
Fotograf Contemporary offers a selection of Libuše Jarcovjáková’s works for sale, and, on the occasion of the exhibition, is releasing a limited-edition print from the Rooms and Beds series. Only one hundred copies will be available on the platform fotografcontemporary.cz, at an affordable price for the wider public.
The Photographer exhibition will take place at Fotograf Gallery from November 19 to December 20, 2024.
