Silence II

Silence II is probably not accompanied by the adventure of discovering new paths and refining one's own vision in the first set. In one respect, however, it completes Šimánek's gradual suppression of that sociocritical admixture from which it was never possible to completely disregard before. With the new photographs, taken in 2014 and 2018, it is not important where and under what circumstances they were taken. In fact, they are just a few photographs of ordinary walls, whose colour and textural compositions clearly form the basic level of communication with the viewer. In them, Šimánek develops the previously discovered proximity of photography with the possibilities of abstract painterly geometry and the sensual effect of pictorial elements. (Jiří Ptáček)

Bio

Dušan Šimánek comes from Příbram. After graduating in photography from FAMU (1973–1978), he worked closely as an artist with historian and curator Anna Fárová. Professionally, he worked in fashion and advertising photography. In 2006, Torst publishing house published his photographic monograph. In 2006–2011 he worked as co-curator of Langhans Gallery in Prague. Since 2011 he has been working in the archive of the Langhans Foundation Prague. He is a freelance artist, exhibiting in the Czech Republic and abroad, his works are represented in public and private collections.
